P6/P7 Maths Trail
Primary 6 & Primary 7 Outdoor Maths Trail
On Monday 23rd March, our Primary 6 and Primary 7 pupils took part in an exciting Outdoor Maths Trail around our school grounds. This hands on learning experience encouraged pupils to apply a wide range of mathematical skills in a practical, active and enjoyable way. The boys and girls thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of solving real life problems outdoors while working collaboratively with their classmates.
Throughout the trail, pupils used a variety of strategies to explore key areas of Numeracy, including:
- Number: estimating, counting, multiplying and working with large quantities in everyday contexts such as bird boxes, trees, fence panels, playground tiles and school buildings.
- Shape & Space: identifying 2D shapes within outdoor structures, spotting shapes in the modular unit, sheds, main school building and outdoor play resources.
- Symmetry: investigating lines of symmetry in buildings, sheds, play equipment, the playground layout and other outdoor features.
- Area & Perimeter: estimating and measuring the area and perimeter of locations such as the playground, sheds, the welcome sign, the modular unit and other outdoor resources. Pupils also estimated the height and area of the bird boxes.
- Handling Data: gathering information on shapes found around the school, creating tally charts and presenting their findings using bar charts or line graphs
- Angles: identifying, estimating and measuring a variety of angles—including right, acute, obtuse, straight line and reflex angles—using protractors.
The trail offered a brilliant opportunity for pupils to take their learning beyond the classroom and see how mathematics is all around them. Their enthusiasm, teamwork and problem solving skills were fantastic to see.
Well done to all our Primary 6 and Primary 7 pupils for completing the trail with such positivity and determination. We are very proud of how confidently and creatively you used your maths skills!
